Guess it comes down to the story teller, players and if the characters make sense in the game. Finding the balance between rp and dice rolling is a challenge. Each of us like one a little more then the other.

Well my orginal question of what makes a vet role player a vet roleplayer has still gone unanswered. What, there is No definitive answer? Just wondering.
Also what is a good way to character build? Group talk with your fellow players? Work the story out the dm? Do it all yourself? Each has pros and cons

A veteran player is one who has seen lots of play time in all the seats and in a variety of games...now we aren't talking about expert players, I can't say that any of our group is an expert, but most of the seats are filled with veterans.

I'm not sure where exactly it started, or why its important in any way. But we label things so we know how to place and use them.
For instance, we call you a veteran player, that means we are aware that you have a useful foundation of the rules set, and are more likely than not to help a player who is struggling in and around the game.
If you like I could call you something else, but handing you a merit badge to mark your achievements just isn't necessary. If you don't want to be labeled, that's fine and understood, however no more or less prevented than before.
If a GM is aware of his "veteran" or stronger players, he knows he can challenge them in ways a newer player is not likely to do as well with. For instance, some of our players do not have proper access to the resource books, and yet still like to play. Or like me, and don't really read them much (until recently) and wing it a lot. We'll suffer for it in our own precious little ways.
Whereas if you know the RAW a little better than I, you are likely the one chuckling (or grimacing) at the fact that my ineptitude just caused a TPK. And all I had to do was burn a vitae point and muscle out...HAH! oops.
Does all of this really matter? Not in the long run, but it does help to make some decisions, and to get some flow moving. For instance, if anyone has trouble character building and comes to me, I will gladly try to help. But if you frustrate me too much with closed-mindedness, or maybe its me that is having trouble getting out of the box the PC began in, I'll just send you to Tony. Besides I'll just get stuck on a name. pfft!
If you need a rule check, I send all applicants to Ryan, or Alex, depending on what time of day it is. Alex because he has a working knowledge with a good memory, and Ryan for the same (plus he owns nearly EVERY frickin book!) Really, if you have to come to me for something...ummm, maybe prelude type stuff, or in general, I have pretty good knowledge of the material that a lot of other players scoff at or are at least less likely to enjoy for whatever reason. (Hunters, Tough Heroes, Beguilers, Bards, that kinda stuff.)
I am always surprised when anyone asks for my help, because I'm always the half-ass-ed read player. And it feels good, but only until I get stuck and have to refer you elsewhere. I don't own most of the books, I don't color in the lines, and I work weird schedules. BUT, I'm always happy to help! I guess that still makes me a vet, or a brownie, or an agent or whatever the hell I'm supposed to be, eh?

Ah, well I was wondering cause when I originally ask about veterans no one even touched that subject and moved on. Dicky did mention his WoW vet status at least. I am sorry if I feel Vet status does not equal a strong player, I have seen too many examples of "vets" not being up to par (this is not just limited to rp but work, and other activities where people use the term vet insert title). Like I mentioned before its bittersweet to me, do to seeing the good and bad of "vet" status in anything.
I don't think you should ask me about rules, Ryan is the one with all the info that is needed to look it up and restate what is written. I read and remember somethings, but until it is put into play I do not recall everything i read (mostly cause I read a lot). I can help and work with someone to look up rules, but without the books I can only give how I would do a action based on my style of story telling.
