Well you either believe that something is out there or you don't. I will start my stating that this thread is not to convince you one way or the other. I am not one of those people who jump when the tv randomly turns on and yell its a ghost, but if weird stuff happens and it can't be explained rationaly well then it all depends on what the happened.
Example; About 3 years ago my then girlfriend and my I were sleeping on the floor in the living room. And both of us woke up to the sound of a statue falling in between us. Now before anyone says that the statue was on a uneven ledge, or vibrations knocked it over, or it was a mouse that knocked it over let me say this. We were roughly five feet away from the ledge where the statue was at, there were smaller statues in front of it, and the statue weights a little under 5 pounds. So there was nothing to really push it, nor could it have just fallen by itself and "bounced" over 5 feet. I can't explain it, but at the same time I cannot disprove it due to it just not being possible unless it was throw. Why was it thrown? No idea. Has it happened again? No we moved the statue to another room like a week later when we rearranged the room.
Ex 2) Droz was over at my house around say 4-5 years ago, he and Lady were visiting and having dinner with us just before Christmas. My sister and her boyfriend wanted their picture taken and he said that he would take the picture for them. Well they stood in front of a old vanity mirror, and he stood in the hallway to get a clean shot of them. After he took at the picture my sister looked at the photo and asked who the woman was, curious we all looked at the picture. In the mirror behind her and her BF was a woman looking down at them. At the time Droz claimed it was Lady standing behind him. But here are the things that didn't add up. Lady was in the kitchen when the picture was taken, Droz was not in the picture and he would have shown up in the mirror if Lady was in it, also the angle for someone behind him was way off for it to match up. If I still had the picture I would post it up for you to see, but it was lost when the camera was broken due to clumsy siblings and drinks (least it wasn't my camera).
Well I have given two recent things tales for you to try and figure out or you can share your own stories and see if there was something that you missed.
Also I ask if you were to go ghost hunting what is your ideal equipment? And what "rules" are a must for you?

MY Ghost Hunting rules; 1) Never go alone (it easy to scare yourself into thinking you saw something, no one to back you up, helps keep you focused)
2)Have a plan of action (knowing what you want to get done, and how to do it will help you in the long run)
3)Keep a open mind, and look at how it can be disproved
Equipment: flashlight, Electronic voice recorder, video camera, digital camera, baby powder (you would be surprised as to it being useful) and a friend. This is my basic list my wish list would have a heat senor in there, but hey work with what you got.
I can honestly go on for hours on the subject but i want to hear what you guys have to say.

Ghost Hunting Rules cont.
4) Keep the screamers and people that jump at everything at home (they can cause others to get scared due to group think)
5) Keep an eye out for faulty floor boards
6) Ensure you have permission to be on the premises
Equipment additions: Cell phone (in the event of injury), a small new testimont/psalm bible.

Awww... that means I gotta stay home. (I tend to scream/squeal/fight back when something scares me. That's the last thing you'd need is the ghost thinking we're hostile. lol)

You could always just gag yourself, lol. I have noticed ghosts that think you are hostile will mostly just stay hidden.

in addition to your list of items: first aid kit, and batteries. also a lighter. for some reason, electronics like to die at the most inopertune times, and a lighter works well, or a flare (but thats kinda over-the-top)
i was spending the summer with my great aunt in an old farmhouse she lived in. i had this sudden, unrelenting urge to run to the basement. my great uncle (who had just got home from work) grabbed me and pinned me down, while i screamed at him to let me into the basement. my aunt opened the stair door to the basement, and about three steps down there was some electrical wire ran about 5 inches off the ground from one side of the stairs to the other. at the bottom of the stairs was 2 metal coat racks, 5 or 6 garden stakes, and a bucket of nails. if i had ran down the stairs, i would have tripped and fell, probably killing myself. we found out later that there had been a string of murders commited in the basement of that house. i still have no idea why i wanted to run down there so badly, cuz that basement scared me at the time.

First Aid Kit?? Not to sure on that one unless you are somewhere you should not be to begin with, or are out in the boonies. But its better to be safe then sorry (don't know about you but if the "ghost" is able to physically hurt me I am gone.)
Batteries is a great idea, many "professional" paranormal investigators agree that the ghosts like to drain them so you will go threw them fairly quick.
As to your story X, well damn. I personally have never been "influenced" but there are some stories of that kinda stuff happening out there. And generally that leads to "demon" vibe, which I recommend just not going near or getting a priest.

well, in all honesty, the first aid kit is more a "damnit! why do you trip on $h*t all the time?" item, because there is always that chance youll cut yourself on something and not want to bleed everywhere lol.
my family has always been rather sensative to these things. i have all sorts of stories from when i was a kid or my parents, my aunts, ect.
my cousin is currently 15. before she was born, my aunt and uncle lived in a small trailer. they had a room devoted to, well, demonic stuff of various strengths. they owned three perfect (100% correctly made) wigi boards, and a bunch of other things. one thing that they had that ive only seen two other places is whats called an "etched mirror-portal." its exactly what it sounds like. somehow my uncle and aunt where never bothered by them (gave me the friggin creeps) but one day they found out my aunt was pregnant. they decided to purge the room and make it a nursery. my uncle was about to destroy the last mirror when it fell and shatered- NOT the way to destroy it.
about 10 years pass, and nothing happens. then my cousin starts complaining she hears a dog growling under her bed, and shes so scared that it keeps her awake at night. the mirror had fallen and shattered right where her bed was setting. i was fifteen at the time, so this was about 4 years after i stumbled upon a certain book. one night while i was there she started crying in her room, and i went to check on her. i walked in her room and found a set of glowing red eyes bobing slowly up and down about 4 feet from her bed. i walked between it and her and simply said "If you dont leave this place alone, i will deal you a fate worse than death."
to this day that trailer is still used, and the family that lives there now has no problems with animals of any kind, be it dogs, cats, squirrles, anything. they seem to run away from the house.

oh, and as for the priest- there are easier and better ways to rid things like that, because finding a "true" priest that actually knows what hes doing can be difficult.

While yes there may be easier way to deal with things of this nature, I believe it comes down to ones knowledge in such things along with ones faith (in themselves or in God). And yes finding a priest with the abilities to deal with such events is difficult at best (the Roman Catholic church actually has a small unit trained to handle such things, granted they are only like 20 strong.)
I have always believed that sensitivity runs in a family's blood line. So if one parent is sensitive then then the children have a chance of being one as well (please note that there are many people out who want to be sensitive and believe every odd event is a ghost, it can be annoying at times, also some people will work themselves into "seeing" things as well.) Those that are have a tick that alerts them, each is different but generally is there. Also ones ability to believe or throw the idea of the paranormal is determined by their beliefs and how they were raised.
I personally would never go near a wigi board again (correctly made or not). They are gate ways to whatever, and the last time I played with one the mess took like a month to deal with. Not to mention my family has a "gift" of being followed by strays. For some reason its my cousin Freddy, Fernando and myself that either deal with or bring them. Doesn't help that our entire family is a sensitive on some level.
There are many theories out there that deal with the paranormal, some take a religious rout, others don't. I tend to enjoy the discussion of paranormal with others regardless of their stand point.

lol, me too. its not that i dont like using religous ways of "fixing" things, it just tends that i know more from other standpoints. generally, because my great aunt is wicca, i use more wiccan based ways to deal with things (she is the second most sensative in my family. sadly i am the first)
and about the wigi boards.... i try to avoid them as much as possible. we have had quite a few "accidents" because of them in the family, one of which landed my great uncle in the hospitol. so yeah, agree with you there.
i do agree with you, however, if you have no idea what your doing, its a good idea to call someone else, be it a priest, friend, or just someone who knows more.
i have two ticks that happen depending on the situation. if whatever im dealing with is not of a, for lack of better term, "good" variety, my saliva and throat both seem to heat up. it feels like i just gulped a coffee pot full of boiling coffee.
the other tick happens whenever anything else is around. my ears get warm, like when your blushing almost, and the back of my neck starts to feel really, really cold. but ive found that my actions tend to be very extreme. they happen at different levels, of course. but those are my ticks.
