Intelligence. A smart group, a group that makes the Dm think on the fly. I feel it is vital for a group's prosperity to have an equal say on things oocly but in Rp to be a different case. I've seen too many Rp's die and smolder when everyone in Rp wanted to do their own thing and not work together. I find that a single character or two are best for pulling the group together and being the glue. A defined leader is both what the Real World has and what the Fantasy world has. Hell, in the fantasy worlds its a feudal society, dictator ships and the draconian style is what its all about! If its not Broken, don't fix it.

Out of Character, a good gaming group is a gathering of open-minded imaginative individuals, who really enjoy each others company.
All of the above are not always achieved, but in my opinion, are preferred.
In Character, well herein lies the biggest problems I think. But I'll just answer the question. Ideally, you want a leader (ONE LEADER) who is really in tune with his companions, and their abilities and strengths as well as weaknesses in the party. This guy should be a good, fast decision maker, who always leaves room for suggestion from others, but ultimately should have "the greater good of the party" in mind at all times.
Also, the support in the party are not supposed to be dumb followers, but goal oriented contributors with convictions of their own and skills that make them worthwhile.
The group of characters should be ones who readily fight for a similar cause. Not necessarily best friends who "will do anything for one another at the drop of a hat" (sorry for the jab, but that particular line of reasoning made me want to vomit honestly), but will however find reason and cause for the disposition they all have for each other. Good or bad. And still have reason for partying.
Whether for fortune and glory, thrill seeking, duty, boundless conviction, slavery, or even with some, sex (Tai); there should at least be A reason, and a good one. Otherwise...well, why bother playing together in the first place?

All of these can be applied oocly and/or icly: 1. Enjoy each others company. 2. Open minded. 3. Willing to follow. 4. No clashing egos that hamper the cohesion of the group, unless it furthers the story as decided when the party is formed. 5. Someone willing to bear the mantle of leader (not necessarily a squad leader as Droz seems to suggest). 6. Trust. 7. Trust. 8. Trust. 9. A willingness to share information, preferably correct information. 10. A willingness to aid their fellow party members in times of need. 11. A party of characters who were created with the other characters in mind during the creation process. Not necessarily hand holding while tiptoeing through the tulips with tralalas and whatnot, but definitely not "A fashion consultant, an urban commando and a Hari Krishna walk into a bar..." To sum up, a party with focus. 11a. A party with focus that is in sync with the Story presented by the GM. 12. Finally, a willingness to have fun. (In response to the Jab: The "do anything at the drop of the hat" was used as an extreme to get my point across, I wanted characters who would work together without much of a hitch (however that comes to fruition), in stark contrast to the barely helpful fellow party members I had to deal with in a previous campaign *cough* *cough* Also, the idea of playing normal Joes and "honey-pots" make me want to vomit, so nyaah! lol)

I like that...a little sass there!
To be fair, she played a honey pot as well as you played a holy man...so there's a jab back. Neither was done very well IMO.
And for that matter, as we discussed that game never had any REAL hunters...save maybe Blake and Simon...hard to tell though until recently.

I agree with Rock on enjoying each others company cause whats the point if you are not having fun.
Being open minded is a must for any group, but that means you need to Listen to the other members of the group for that. We are all guilty of not listening at one point or another. Recognizing and correcting that is key.
Working with the other members to get a goal done, even if later you are gonna stab them in the back. It happens.
A themed group, which means figuring out what best works. And not catering to the one person who has to play the character/race/class that just does not mess.
Willing to share the spot light, each person came to the table to have their character do their thing, why let it go to waste.
The list could go on, but it all depends on what you view as the main issue with the whole thing. Each party is different just like each player is.
B, Rock if things make you want to vomit the best thing to do is put it down and don't touch it....just don't.
