This thread is for those participating in the game that will be run by me at each BRB meeting. It is a 4th Ed D&D Fantasy setting game, and the players in are Xenocide, Reigneer, RJRock85 and LABael.
Go ahead and use this thread to post character ideas, collaborate on backgrounds, ask me or each other any questions.
I'd like to see some stable character ideas posted here before the next meeting so that I can prepare myself as much as possible.
Start your character at level 3 and for my own sanity, please keep it simple. I tend to be a pretty loose DM (at least I think so) and would prefer to keep the book-diving to a minimum at the table, especially since we will be working on a limited timeframe. We have 5 hours available to us each Sunday that we meet, and if we can have a good 2 1/2-3 hour session each meet, then I will be happy and satisfied, and that will leave room for us to meet/mingle/do other sorts of games as well.
Come ready to play next month and until then, let's see some brainstorming!

i am going to be a goliath barbarian. goliaths take anything and everything that can be turned into a competeition into one. they do not like cheaters or poor loosers, and are daring to the point of foolhardiness.
ill post more about the character himself in another update cuz i havent actually started him yet. peace guys! (and gals!)

ugh, another quick question- how are we doing stats? point-buy, array, or rolled? i favor point buy or array cuz its more balanced-ish, but idk what you wanted. in the mean time im gonna use an array and stick to that till i get your response

I usually do point-buy (I think, correct me if I'm wrong, Droz) with 32 points at start up (level 1). And then add the appropriate points that you would have by level 3.
As for starting monies, I will get back to you shortly after some research. I know 3.5 had starting money for each class, not sure if 4e does that (I don't see it offhand).

Just a heads up: the Standard Point Buy is 22 points.
I'd be grateful for the 32 point build, but I'm just bringing that to your attention.
Equipment for beyond level 1 in formulaic format. DMG pg 143
At level n:
A magic item of level (n + 1); A magic item of level n; A magic item of level (n - 1); Gold enough to buy a magic item of level (n - 1); And all the mundane goods you want.
So at level 3: One level 4 magic item One level 3 magic item One level 2 magic item 520 Gold And all the mundane goods you want.
But, of course, this is all dependent on DM fiat.

Anyways, I'm planning on throwing down a Dwarven Battlemind or Paladin.
He was born a noble son of his clan's Thane. As he grew up he displayed great martial prowess as well as a prodigy in athletic pursuits. He was deemed worthy to bear his family's prized heirloom, a Warhammer used by his thrice great grandfather in an ancient war against the goblins beneath his ancestral citadel. He joined the military and earned high honors, but shortly thereafter his luck turned. While on patrol on the surface his squadron encountered a group of Orc Marauders. Despite his considerable abilities, he was knocked off a steep cliff and fell unconscious but alive. When he awoke, he found that his squad was decimated and his heirloom missing. He returned to his father in shame. He was stripped of his beard and told not to return until he retrieves the Warhammer and redeems the loss on the mountainside. Now, after three years of wandering and searching for the Warhammer, he finds himself adventuring to make a living and earn glory so that he may regain his pride; hoping to someday come across the Warhammer, wherever it may be.

kk, here is what ive got for my barbarian:
Being the son of the chieftain, Ur-gos aspired to do great things. When the clans executioner died in a raid defending his father, he stepped in and took the job. When he turned twenty, however, everything changed. After taking his share of lunch, he went to walk the grounds of the clan’s holdings. He came across a young, blue-haired female Tiefling stealing food. Instead of taking the Tiefling to his father and letting him dole out punishment, he hid the Tiefling until he was found taking food from the storage for the child. Both himself and the Tiefling where exiled shortly after.
After being exiled, the Tiefling disappeared one night without a trace. Falling in with a band of adventurers, he has sworn on the execution axe that he carries that he will not lose this family as well. He goes where they do, hoping that he can do better for them then the blue haired Tiefling child.
thanks for the clarification. ill get right to fixing it.

Ok, thanks to Rock for the rules clarification. I don't completely like what's given, so I'm modifying it a bit. If you think it's under/overpowered, please just trust me to make what's given to you an equal balance as to what's given to your opponents.
Starting point buy - 22 points for 1st level. Add in points for additional levels as appropriate.
Starting money/equipment - You will start with 500 gold each to spend on your equipment. That is your limit on what you can spend on armor, weapons, mundane items, and magic items for all three levels. (Not 500g/level, just 500 total. That is the worth of your possessions at the start of the campaign.) Any gold not spent will be lost. Each character will be starting the campaign with 25 gold in their pocket that is not part of the original 500, no more, no less. If you intend to buy magic/wondrous items or magical/enhanced armor/weapons/items, please let me know what they are so I can do some quick study up on them. If you don't wish to post your possessions here, send them to me via PM.
Each character will start the story with an item of unknown value or ability. I will decide on what those items are once I see what types of characters will be playing. You may choose to keep these items, have them identified, or sell/trade them for whatever you think they might be worth. That will be available to you in the first few sessions. If at any point your character is looking for a particular item, please let me know your intentions and I, as DM, will do my best to accommodate/compromise your request. This game will not feature the "Magical Wal-Mart", which I hope will eliminate unnecessary book-diving.
**I like the character backgrounds given to me thus far. Thanks for including details that can help me give you story that your characters will actually be interested in! Mr. Bael, if you could go a bit further in depth with your character, it would be much appreciated.

And just a little advice from the big boys at WotC that I'd like you to keep in mind for this game.
DMG pg 12.
Tips From the Pros
When I started working at Wizards of the Coast, it took a long time before I felt comfortable running a game for any of my coworkers, even though I used to always DM for my friends back home. They all knew the rules better than did, and I didn’t want to get caught in a stupid mistake. Eventually, I got over that. When I’m not sure of a rule, I ask my players what they think. If I make a mistake, my players point it out respectfully, and I reconsider my decision. From my perspective, the DM is the person who prepares adventures, plans a campaign, and runs the monsters and NPCs. I don’t want to be a referee or judge, and my players don’t expect me to.
*Just a reminder to take it easy on the DM who's barely GMed and played 4e even less. Remember to Keep It Simple Stupid and please be kind and courteous when "correcting" me. If it turns out my playstyle just isn't your cup of tea, I won't take offense, just please excuse yourself from the game so that those who are enjoying it can continue to do so. Heavens knows there are some DMs whose styles just don't suit me too. Thanks, and game on!

I'm cool with only having 500 gold instead of an equivalent of 2560 gold, as long as you keep in mind that those bonuses to attack and defense granted by magical items are factored in to the balance of the game and the challenges we face. If you don't plan on closing our monetary gap, then try to treat us as 2nd level characters for the purposes of the challenges we may face. I'm only suggesting this in order to assuage any frustration that may pop up. Again, it is up to you. I support you in your thinking and trust that you know what you are doing.
I'll post my equipment list as soon as I do some reshuffling.

Name: Orsik (He has lost the use of his clan name due to his dishonor.)
Personality Traits: Prideful. Duty-Bound. Looming Shame. Hates Orcs. Fears Further Damage to his Honor. Lover of Music with a Particular Fondness for the Exotic Sounds of Elven Music.
Physical Appearance and Mannerisms: Short cropped, light brown/gray hair. Short goatee with no other facial hair. He never lets the goatee grow past two inches in length. He has dark gray ancestral tattoos that travel from the right side of his face down his shoulder to the back side of his hand. Over his right eye he bears a scar he earned while in battle with the Orcs that sent him down his current path. When distracted by inner turmoil he tends to stroke his goatee or run a finger along the length of the bottom half of his scar.
