In DnD, one of the most iconic villains is the vampire. In 4th edition, You can play a Vryloka (human vampire, more or less) as well as the class Vampire. In older editions, Vampire itself was a race. How does everyone here feel about Vamps? And not the gay sparkly kind, either?

I consider it to be like a sub-race. Every vampire, no matter the game system, was a particular race when it was mortal. So vampires can be human, elven, gnome, dwarf, halfling, goblin, whatever. (I haven't read enough of the books from either 3.5 or 4e to know if there are any rules stating that specific races are allowed or prohibited, but I always think that a player's character options are only limited by his and the DM's imagination. Just like in WoW, all Undead are the same for the sake of mechanics. But in the roleplaying aspect, not every Undead has to be human. But even there you have the Undead race and the Death Knight class.)
I think it just comes down to another scenario where it depends on how the DM wants to run the game and playing by his/her set of rules.
In a real world comparison, it's like asking if being Jewish is a race/ethnicity or a religion. Some say it's one, some say it's the other, some say it's both.
